Eschmann Card

In 1840 the contract between the St.Galler government and the Zürcher Geodät and mathematician Johannes Eschmann (1808-1852) was concluded to take up a cantonal map. The recordings of the 16-sheet work were made between 1841 and 1846, the publication took place in stages 1851-1854. On the basis of the railways already under construction at that time, according to the official report of the canton of St.Gallen 1854, p. 24f., the Rorschach-Wil line, which was built under the St.Gallisch-Appenzell Railway, was chosen, in part, resulting in unsightly linear overlaps in the map image.
