The representativeness of rural areas plays a pivotal role in the development of rural tourism. However, the connotation of rural belonging has not yet reached a consensus, and the transformation of such representativeness across different social contexts remains unclear. This study aims to reveal the rurality and its changes in rural tourism destinations guided by social representation theory. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 50 residents and 17 tourists from the Nanjing rural tourism destination in China. We identified three core categories of rural representativeness in rural tourism destinations: material, social, and cultural dimensions. Six sub-categories were extracted: natural environment, settlement architecture, production and daily life, interpersonal communication, folk festivals and celebrations, and spiritual orientation. We further concluded that the rural portrayed in rural tourism destinations has shifted from an agriculture-based foundation to a tourism-based one. We confirmed that rural representation is socially constructed and varies across different social contexts. Rural tourism should have a clear understanding of the connotation of rural representation, view rural areas from the perspective of change, and promote the high-quality development of rural tourism.
