The study investigates the factors driving violent extremism in Georgia by focusing on communities that have lost members to conflicts in Syria and Iraq, particularly the Pankisi Gorge and Adjaran eco-migrant communities. It explores the push and pull factors that contribute to radicalization and aims to understand the social, economic, and political conditions that may lead individuals to join extremist groups. The goal is to inform policies that can help prevent radicalization and strengthen resilience in vulnerable areas.
Population: Matched sample survey: Identify most similar communities that have and have not lost members to the conflict in Syria and Iraq in Georgia statistically, using matching
Sample Design: Multivariate matching with genetic weighting.
Sample Size: 1,180 respondents.
Response rate: 73%
Survey mode: Computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI).
Interview languages: Georgian
Fieldwork Dates: June 6, 2018 to July 30, 2018.
