This analysis dataset is based on the International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS). At the end of each month, the ERSST dataset updates the data collected via GTS ship observations and buoys for that month. Sea surface temperature anomalies are calculated relative to the multi-year average from 1971 to 2000. ERSST.v3b uses in-situ sea surface temperature data, improves statistical methods, and enables stable reconstruction of sparse data. The monthly analysis data spans from January 1854 to the present; however, due to the sparsity of early data, the analytical signals are damped prior to 1880. The signal intensity is consistent after 1880. This dataset is suitable for long-term global and basin-scale research, as local short-term variability has been smoothed out.
