We quantified possible thermal carryover effects in brook trout (<i>Salvelinus fontinalis</i>) across ontogeny and multiple genetically distinct wild and hatchery-origin populations. Populations were incubated in the laboratory in four differing thermal regimes: ambient stream-fed water, chronically warmed, ambient with a mid-winter cold-shock, and short-term warming. We examined upper thermal tolerance at the embryonic, fry (10 weeks post-full-hatch and 27-30 weeks post-full-hatch) and gravid adult life stages. In a separate experiment, we exposed developing embryos to seven-day heat stress events immediately following fertilization and at the eyed-egg-stage to examine possible thermal carryover effects at the 37-weeks-post-full-hatch stage.
