To collect this data, an Internet-wide IP address sweep was conducted. Every IP address in the ranges allocated by IANA was pinged once by sending ICMP ECHO_REQUEST (PING) packet. If the response (ICMP_ECHO_REPLY) came, its IP address was recorded in this data-set. In all, over 2.5 billion distinct IP addresses were probed during this experiment.为采集本数据集，研究人员开展了全球互联网IP地址全域扫描。针对互联网编号分配机构（Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, IANA）分配的所有地址段内的每一个IP地址，研究人员均发送一次ICMP回显请求（ICMP ECHO_REQUEST，即PING）数据包以进行PING探测。若接收到对应的ICMP回显应答（ICMP_ECHO_REPLY），则将该IP地址记录至本数据集。本次实验中共探测到超过25亿个唯一IP地址。
