There are two motivations to determine the genome sequence of <i>Salix purpurea</i>: 1) the organism is a bioenergy crop and knowing the genome sequence will facilitate further development 2) <i>Salix</i> and <i>Populus</i> are two genera in the tribe <i>Salicae</i> and knowing the genome sequence of both allows greater understanding of each.
