Zumberge was chief glaciologist for the United States during the International Geophysical Year (1957-1958), in which sixty-seven countries participated in a massive program to study the continent. Cape Zumberge and the Zumberge Coast were named in honor of his work studying ice breakup patterns on the Ross Ice Shelf and for his promotion of sensible stewardship of the continent. A result of this international collaboration was the landmark Antarctic Treaty, which prohibits military or exploitative uses of the continent, and encourages the free exchange of research data.; Charles Swithinbank was chief glaciologist with the British Antarctic Survey in 1984. He was a member of the Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition 1949-1952. He was employed by the expedition until 1955 and then at the Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) until 1959. From 1959 to 1963 he was a Research Associate and Lecturer at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
