This dataset is the digitization of the Heihe River Basin section of the *Atlas of Chinese Vegetation at a Scale of 1:1,000,000*. Edited by Academician Hou Xueyu, a renowned plant ecologist (Hou, 2001), this atlas was jointly compiled by over 250 experts from 53 institutions including relevant research institutes under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, relevant ministries and commissions, relevant departments of provinces, autonomous regions, and institutions of higher learning. It is another landmark summary achievement of Chinese plant ecologists over the past four decades following the publication of monographs such as *Vegetation of China*, and serves as a fundamental cartographic document for China's natural resources and natural conditions. It was compiled based on abundant first-hand data accumulated from nationwide vegetation surveys over the past half-century, materials obtained via modern technologies such as aerial remote sensing and satellite imagery, as well as the latest research findings in geology, pedology and climatology. It comprehensively describes the distribution status and the horizontal and altitudinal zonation rules of 960 vegetation units (formations and sub-formations) under 11 vegetation type groups and 55 vegetation types across China. Furthermore, it records the actual distribution of more than 2,000 dominant plant species, major crops and cash crops in China, as well as the close associations between dominant species and soil and surface geology. This atlas falls under the category of actual vegetation maps, and reflects the recent quality status of vegetation in China.
