<b><i>South African Computer Journal </i></b><b><i>(1979 – 2023)</i></b>

This single journal study aims to provide an overview of the history and development of the <i>South African Computer Journal</i> (formerly <i>Quaestiones Informaticae</i>) over the 45 years from 1979 to 2023 ) alongside a bibliometric and altmetric analysis covering the 45 years from 1979 to 2023. Google Scholar was selected as the source of citation data, while Mendeley readership counts served as an alternative metric indicator. A total of 768 papers were analysed to assess annual article output, author productivity, authorship patterns and collaboration trends. The average number of articles published per year was 17. The journal exhibits a clear shift from single authorship to multi-authorship, with co-authored papers increasing from 22% (1979 to 1989) to 70% (1990 to 2023). Of the 768 articles, 60% had Google Scholar citations, while 40% remained uncited. The average number of Google Scholar citations per paper was 8.3 (1979 to 2023). From 1990 to 2023, 55% of papers had Mendeley readers compared to 60% with Google Scholar citations. The most productive authors were P. Kotze, D.G. Kourie, M.S. Olivier and I. Sanders.<br>
