MACROFLORAL AND ORGANIC RESIDUE (FTIR) ANALYSES AT SITE 5LR11836, COLORADO

Fill from the interior of a fire-cracked rock feature at site 5LR11836 in northern Colorado was floated to recover macrofloral remains. Two rocks capping the feature were examined for organic residues using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Charcoal from the feature fill yielded a date of 4180 ± 40 BP. Macrofloral analysis will be used to provide information concerning plant resources utilized by the site occupants. FTIR analysis of the feature rocks will look for the presence of proteins, lipids, esters, and/or carbohydrates to identify plant and/or animal foods that might have been cooked in this feature.
