This study presents the first exploration on abundance, species composition and spatial variations of the total and alive microbial community in 1 cm sectioned sediment cores from the deepest points of the Mariana (depth = 10853 m) and Mussau trenches (depth = 7011 m), using high-throughput sequencing on amplicons of both 16S rRNA gene and 16S rRNA.
