Sleep Extension and Musical Skills data
Prior research demonstrates sleep benefits cognition, motor skills, and memory consolidation. This study examined the impact of sleep extension on key musical skills in musicians. Fifty participants were divided into control and intervention groups. Sleep was tracked using wearable technology. Rhythm, sightreading, memory, psychological flexibility, and sleepiness were assessed at baseline, after 1 day, and after 7 days. The intervention group received 60 to 90 minutes of additional nightly sleep above their baseline measurements. From baseline to final assessment, they exhibited 5.5% greater improvement in rhythm, 7.4% in sightreading, and 33.5% in musical memory compared to controls. These differences highlight sleep's facilitative role in consolidating motor skills, cognitive function and musical memory. Results highlight the substantial benefits of sleep extension for musicians’ performance and wellbeing. Findings suggest extended sleep interventions may optimize musicians’ abilities and success.
