Since the launch of ChatGPT, artificial intelligence has exerted a significant impact on the development of embodied-cognitive translation. However, these impacts are merely auxiliary to the development of embodied-cognitive translation, since ChatGPT, as a tool, cannot enhance human brain capabilities themselves. Through empirical research, this study finds that a considerable proportion of Chinese English learners do not apply syntactic processing to sentence comprehension during English-Chinese translation, and further proposes that the reason why these participants abandon syntactic processing is that syntactic processing is unhelpful for sentence comprehension in many cases. This cognitive deficit—abandoning syntactic processing during sentence comprehension—cannot be improved through ChatGPT. On the contrary, the key to solving this problem lies in how to make syntactic processing beneficial to sentence comprehension at the cognitive level. This kind of cognitive thinking-oriented research is the development path of embodied-cognitive translation, while ChatGPT, as an achievement of artificial intelligence, is only a research tool for embodied-cognitive translation. This paper offers certain enlightenment for cognitive syntax research from the perspective of embodied-cognitive translation studies.
