It is non-capsulated and motile via peritrichous flagella. It produces acid regularly and rapidly from glucose, and slowly and irregularly from fructose, galactose and glycerol; the methyl red test is usually positive. It lacks the ability to degrade pectin and algin. Its growth temperature range is 10–43 °C. It may possess fimbriae and shows a strong spontaneous swarming tendency.
