IFLA Statement on Legal Deposit

Legal deposit is critical for the preservation of and access to a nation’s documentary heritage. It enables the comprehensive collection of national publications in all media, supports preservation, and contributes to the perpetuation of an informed citizenry. A robust and effective system should exist in every country, based on close cooperation between national custodians and depositors. Considerations include limiting deposit requirements to what is necessary for access and preservation, ensuring responsible management, including digital and user-generated content, and accommodating the evolving needs of users and copyright holders in the digital environment.
