Flight Balances Blood Glucose in Fruit Bats

The fruit bats consume sugar-rich food, but they are long-lived and escape the side-effects of hyperglycaemia. Our experiments indicated that the fruit bats could regulate their blood glucose levels by flying. High activity might have conferred benefits to the fruit bats in terms of behavioural interactions and foraging success and is likely to have increased their efficiency as plant pollinators and seed spreaders.
