St Helen's Church, Hogback 01

  AOC recorded this stone on behalf of Historic Environment Scotland as part of work at the site of St Helen's Church, Cockburnspath, in spring 2021, following a report of possible damage at the site. The stone is mostly complete at just under 1.5m in length. The carvings are weathered and worn, difficult to make out. One side bears depictions of two animals separated by a tree. The other side has three rows of tegulae, a decorative pattern resembling scales or tiles. The stone probably dates to the 11th century AD. More info: Lang, J., 1975. Hogback monuments in Scotland.
