Marriage by the stars: was an astrologer the wedding planner for King Alfonso X of Castilla and León?

Under King Alfonso X of Castilla and León, valuable scientific texts written in Arabic were translated into Castilian, among them works of astrology. One such translation, <i>El libro conplido en los iudicios de las estrellas,</i> a rich compendium of astrological information and advice, may well have been consulted by the king himself. Evidence has hitherto been lacking for a firm claim of Alfonso’s extra-textual association with astrology. My study contributes to a resolution of this problem by examining the use of election charts or horoscopes in relation to the <i>Infante</i> Alfonso’s wedding to Violante of Aragón in 1249.
