VPRS 821 Bonds Issued by the Board of Land and Works for Managers of Commons

This series consists of bonds lodged by the managers of town and farmers commons. The Land Act 1862 provided that each common should be governed by a manager or managers who in terms of the common management had the powers of a Commissioner of Crown Lands.The bond, normally of one hundred pounds was as a surety for the performance of duties as manager. Details given were the amount lodged, the names, occupations and location of managers and the date and terms of the bond as well as the name and location of the common. Also included are Guarantee Assurance policies guaranteeing the government against loss through the actions of common managers.Further information regarding commons may be found in VPRS 1294 Register of Commons and in VPRS 242 Crown Reserves Correspondence.
