Accurately detecting and segmenting Transmission Towers (TT) and Power Lines (PL) from aerial images plays a critical role in safeguarding both power grid security and the safety of low-altitude unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Meanwhile, aerial images of TT and PL pose numerous novel challenges for computer vision researchers engaged in object detection and segmentation tasks: Power lines are thin and elongated, and may exhibit colors similar to their background; transmission towers have diverse shapes, often composed of line structures with varying sparsity; additionally, background scenes, lighting conditions and object sizes vary significantly across different images. This paper collects and releases a novel aerial image dataset for TT and PL (named TTPLA), which consists of 1,100 images with a resolution of 3,840 × 2,160 pixels, along with 8,987 manually annotated TT and PL instances.
