毒力因子是病原体所具有的能够使其在宿主环境中定植、繁殖和致病的基因产物的统称。对毒力因子的认识和研究不仅是从分子水平揭示病原体致病机理的关键,而且也是相关传染病防控及新型抗毒力因子药物研发的基础。“病原菌毒力因子数据库(VFDB)”收集整理了24个属一百多种重要医学病原细菌已知毒力因子的组成、结构、功能、致病机理和基因组等信息。并整合了比较基因组学的分析手段,一方面从全基因组水平对同属的不同病原菌的毒力因子构成和基因组分布等特征进行了可视化的比较分析;另一方面开展不同病原菌毒力因子之间的遗传多样性和分子进化研究,为揭示阐释关键毒力因子的演化过程和进化规律提供线索。VFDB数据库经过多年的建设与发展已成为目前国际上最大的病原菌毒力因子信息资源中心。
Virulence factors (VFs) are collectively defined as gene products carried by pathogens that enable them to colonize, proliferate and induce disease in the host environment. Research and understanding of virulence factors are not only the key to uncovering the pathogenic mechanisms of pathogens at the molecular level, but also the foundation for the prevention and control of related infectious diseases and the development of novel anti-virulence factor drugs. The Virulence Factor Database (VFDB) collects and organizes information on the composition, structure, function, pathogenic mechanism and genome of known virulence factors from over 100 medically important pathogenic bacterial species belonging to 24 genera. It also integrates comparative genomics analysis tools: on one hand, it conducts visual comparative analyses of characteristics such as the composition of virulence factors and genomic distribution of different pathogenic bacteria within the same genus at the whole-genome level; on the other hand, it carries out studies on genetic diversity and molecular evolution among virulence factors of different pathogenic bacteria, providing clues for revealing and elucidating the evolutionary processes and patterns of key virulence factors. After years of construction and development, VFDB has become the largest international information resource center for pathogenic bacterial virulence factors to date.
