资源简介:

Plasmaspheric hiss is a broadband incoherent whistler mode emission with frequencies ranging from ~20 Hz to ~2 kHz, which is observed predominantly inside the plasmasphere. Hiss waves can efficiently scatter energetic electron into the atmosphere due to cyclotron resonance and result in the formation of the slot region that separates the radiation belts into inner (1.2 < L-shell < 2) and outer (3 < L-shell < 7) parts. Using observations from NASA’s Van Allen Probes, we perform a statistical analysis of the global distribution of hiss wave spectral intensities in the slot region. To examine the scattering effect and determine the resultant electron loss process, we calculate the electron scattering coefficients induced by slot region hiss based on quasi-linear theory and simulate evolutions of electrons flux. Besides validating the contribution of slot region hiss to electron losses, our investigation emphasizes the strong dependence of electron loss timescales on L-shell and kinetic energy, which vary significantly from < 1 day to several hundred days. We also provide an empirical model of slot region electron loss timescales due to plasmaspheric hiss which could be easily used into future modelings of energetic electron dynamics.
