Elemental iron modifies the redox environment of the gastrointestinal tract

This study uses elemental iron, and its oxygen- and reactive oxygen species-scavenging ability, to demonstrate the link between lowering luminal oxygen/reactive oxygen species content, metabolic health and changes in gut microbiome. A link between gut oxygen status and metabolic health will provide rationale for using elemental iron as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool for mitigating metabolic syndrome.
