The bacterial strain Andreprevotia ripae IGB42 was isolated from a soil sample of an anthill in Stuttgart, Germany, during a research project focused on the identification and characterization of new chitinolytic bacteria for use in industrial processes. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16s rDNA grouped the strain IGB-41 within the Betaproeobacteria into the family Neisseriaceae of the class Betaproteobacteria into the genus Andreprevotia together with Andreprevotia lacus GFC-1 T and Andreprevotia chitinilytica JS11-7 T as closest relatives. Characteristic for IGB42 is its ability to degrade chitin.
