(Chinese hickory). It prefers full sunlight, warm and humid climates, and well-drained sandy loam to loam soils with deep, fertile profiles. It begins to flower 4–5 years after planting, and attains stable yields by 7–8 years of growth. The trunk is straight with smooth bark. Winter buds, branchlets and leaves are densely covered with orange-yellow glandular scales. Leaf blades are lanceolate to obovate-lanceolate. This species is monoecious: male inflorescences are catkins measuring 7.5–22 cm in length, while female inflorescences are short spicate ones. The fruit is a drupaceous nut; its exocarp has 4 prominent longitudinal ridges and dehisces into 4 valves, with the hard endocarp (nut) being subglobose. It produces abundant fruit yields.
