Whipworms (Trichuris trichuira) live preferentially in the cecum of their hosts where they tunnel through epithelial cells and cause inflammation potentially resulting in colitis. Despite extensive research, the role of whipworm early interactions with host intestinal epithelial cells in triggering parasite establishment or expulsion remains unclear. The goal of this project is to investigate novel interactions of whipworms with the host intestinal epithelia during the first events of infection. This pilot study will test out SMARTseq2 + Illumina sequencing approach on the limited RNA available from our samples. If successful, the data will be used as the first replicate in a larger study.
