The gastrointestinal microbiota of a foal transitions early in its life as its diet changes from nursing on milk to ingesting solid food. Rectal swabs were taken for 15 foals over the first fifteen days of the lives of the foals. Microbial DNA was isolated and the V3/V4 region of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene was PCR-amplified and sequenced using MiSeq technology.
