Description of the outcomes.
Introduction The Engaging Men through Accountable Practice (EMAP) program is a series of facilitated group discussions for men in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that sought to reduce intimate-partner violence and transform gender relations. While a previous analysis found null impacts on women’s experience of past-year intimate-partner violence (IPV), these average results obscure important heterogeneity. The study objective is to analyze the effects of EMAP on subgroups of couples based on their initial levels of IPV. Methods We use two rounds of data (baseline and endline) collected from adult men (n = 1387) and their female partners (n = 1220) as part of a two-armed, matched-pair, cluster randomized controlled trial conducted between 2016 and 2018 in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Loss to follow up was low as 97% of male and 96% of female baseline respondents were retained at endline. We define subgroups of couples based on their baseline reports of physical and sexual IPV using two different methods: i) subgroups determined by binary indicators of violence at baseline, and ii) Latent Class Analysis (LCA). Results We find that the EMAP program led to a statistically significant decrease both in the probability and severity of physical IPV among women who experienced high physical and moderate sexual violence at baseline. We also find a decrease in the severity of physical IPV (significant at the 10% level) among women who experienced both high physical and high sexual IPV at baseline. Findings indicate that the EMAP program was more effective at reducing IPV perpetration among men who were the most physically violent at baseline. Conclusion These results suggest that men who perpetrate violence against their female partners with greater severity than average may be inspired to reduce their use of violence through participatory discussion with less violent men. In contexts of endemic violence, programs like EMAP can lead to a meaningful short-term reduction in harm to women, perhaps even without transforming prevailing norms about male superiority or the acceptability of IPV. Emotional regulation, symptoms of anxiety and depression in women with a history of intimate partner violence
Abstract This study evaluated depression, anxiety and emotional regulation levels in 47 women who experienced conjugal violence. Furthermore, it was investigated the severity of violence situations and the level of aggression suffered and perpetrated by women. Finally, we investigated possible differences in levels of depression, anxiety and emotional regulation between women who had reported suffering violence and those who reported suffering and perpetrating violence. The results indicated mild levels of anxiety, moderate levels of depression and emotional dysregulation among participants, showing significant correlations. The comparison between the group of women who had reported suffering violence and those who had suffered and perpetrated violence did not indicate differences in depression, anxiety and emotional regulation levels. These results show that exposure to intimate partner violence represents a risk factor for women’s mental health and that psychological evaluation is useful for the development of intervention strategies adjusted to clinical demands.

Emotional and economic intimate partner violence as key drivers of depression and suicidal ideation: A cross-sectional study among young women in informal settlements in South Africa
Little research has assessed the impact of emotional intimate partner violence (IPV) and economic IPV on women’s mental health. Using cross-sectional data from the Stepping Stones and Creating Futures intervention trial baseline, in eThekwini Municipality, South Africa we assess three questions. First, whether emotional IPV and economic IPV make independent contributions to mental health outcomes; second what matters, severity, variety, or absolute experience? and third, are some items more important in driving mental health impacts than others? We assess associations between past 12-month emotional IPV, past 12-month economic IPV, and past week depressive symptoms and past four-week suicidal ideation. We describe the prevalence of each mental health outcome by individual items, including never/ever and frequency, and combined emotional IPV, and economic IPV, reporting depression scores and percentage of suicidal ideation and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Second, we created four-level categorical variables for combinations of emotional, economic, sexual and physical IPV, and present its frequency, and the mean/% and 95% CI for depression symptomatology and suicidal ideation. 680 women (aged 18–30) were enrolled. High levels of past year emotional IPV, economic IPV were reported. 45.3% reported clinically relevant symptoms of depression, and 30.0% past four-week suicidal ideation. All measures of emotional IPV and economic IPV showed a consistent positive correlation with CESD scores, and suicidal ideation. For all four-level categorical constructs the highest depression scores, and prevalence of suicidal ideation, were for combinations of emotional IPV or economic IPV with physical and/or sexual IPV. For depression in 17/18 combinations this was significantly different compared to women reporting no IPV. For suicidal ideation this was significant in 6/18 combinations all related to economic IPV. Emotional IPV and economic IPV have independent associations with women’s mental health, beyond physical IPV and sexual IPV, and also have distinct patterns between each other. Trial registration NCT03022370. Registered 13 January 2017, retrospectively registered.

Screening on intimate partner violence (IPV): Two studies on the validity of an IPV screening instrument in patients in substance abuse treatment
Many patients in substance abuse treatment have perpetrated and / or experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) in the past year. To date, there are no screeners available to identify these patients. We developed a 4 item screening device for this purpose, the Jellinek Inventory for assessing Partner Violence (J-IPV). To investigate the validity of the J-IPV, 2 independent studies were conducted including 97 and 99 participants, respectively. Psychometric properties of the J-IPV were determined by calculating sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value, and positive and negative likelihood ratio’s by comparing J-IPV outcomes to outcomes on the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS2) (‘gold standard’). Results showed that the J-IPV possesses good psychometric properties to detect perpetrators and victims of any as well as severe IPV. We recommend administering the J-IPV to all patients entering substance abuse treatment; if IPV perpetrators and victims are identified, action can be taken to stop IPV perpetration and arrange help for victims.
