Diet indirectly alters parasite resistance through the gut microbiome in monarch butterflies

We leverage the strong interaction between the monarch caterpillar's medicinal milkweed diet and parasite infection to alter the gut microbiome of monarch caterpillars by feeding them fecal-supplemented natural milkweed diets. We demonstrate that Lepidopteran gut microbiomes can have crucial functional role.
