Corn root drill safety zones
The western corn root drill comes from North America and is the most important maize pest there. In the 1990s, the beetle was transported to Europe. In Switzerland, the pest has not been able to establish itself thanks to the crop rotation system and is therefore still a quarantine organism and is monitored annually with pheromone traps. The cantonal plant protection services set traps every year over the summer, mainly in the maize growing areas. Since 2020, the traps have been distributed in a grid pattern. If maize rootworms are caught, it is mandatory to follow a crop rotation restriction (grain cultivation on maize prohibited) within a radius of ten kilometres around the trap location (safety zone). The present polygon data set "corn root drill safety zones" represents the safety zones around the corn root drill sites of the respective year. In these safety zones, the cultivation of maize on maize for farmers is prohibited in the following year.
