The tensile strength of soils is a crucial parameter in civil engineering applications, as it is closely related to the formation of of various types of cracks. However, soil tensile strength is generally smaller than its compressive and shear strength, often resulting in its neglect in both theoretical studies and practical tests. Consequently, the pursuit of accurate and scientific methods for determining soil tensile strength has attracted considerable attention. This paper provides a comprehensive review of tensile strength testing methods for soil, drawing on an extensive body of literature. It systematically categorizes and analyzes both direct and indirect testing approaches, offering a comparative evaluation of the advantages and limitations of existing test equipment, analytical theory, and testing methods.
