Wastes generated from incomplete combustion of carbon-containing material and fossil fuels often contain toxic and hazardous organic compounds such as polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs). Under aerobic conditions and with essential nutrients, bacteria can degrade PAHs into less toxic compounds. However, very little work to date has focused on PAH degradation in high saline environments. Halomonas sp. ML-15 is a haloalkaliphilic bacterium capable of degrading anthracene, pyrene and phenanthrene.
