The BCI "Big tree" had a world-record average crown diameter of 61.3 m. This tree is illustrated on the cover of The First 100 Years of Research on Barro Colorado Island: Plant and Ecosystem Science.

The Árbol Gigante (_Ceiba pentandra_) on Barro Colorado Island is the only single-trunked tree known to have an average crown diameter greater than 61 m. Robert Van Pelt recorded a height of 49.7 m, a 15-m diameter buttressed base, and an average crown diameter of 61.3 m in 1997. The 2009 LiDAR overflight provided here captures the shape of the upper crown and the suppression of surrounding trees. Robert Van Pelt created an orthographic illustration of this tree for the cover of _The First 100 Years of Research on Barro Colorado Island: Plant and Ecosystem Science_ edited by Helene C. Muller-Landau and S. Joseph Wright. The Árbol Gigante collapsed and died in 2013.
